5 Super Nintendo Games in Serious Need of a Reboot

The SNES was my favorite system for a long period of time. These are 5 games that need a next-gen remake. The list is based solely on the SNES game or series.

Killer Instinct

We had Killer Instinct Gold on the N64, but we haven’t had a Mortal Kombat 9 type of remake which really needs to happen. There were rumors that a reboot may be announced at E3 this year, but it never manifested. A fantastic fighting engine that focused on stringing together combos and with unforgettable characters this is one fighting game that needs another kick in the ass. Who can forget Orchid’s No Mercy finisher where she reveals her breasts to a defeated opponent before he dies of a heart attack or landing a ridiculous 43 hit Ultra Combo that sends characters flying off the side of a building onto the street below. This franchise has so much potential to become great and the best part is there’s already a fanbase just waiting to spend money on a new installment. So Rare, quit screwing around with things like “Kinect Sports” and start working on a new Killer Instinct.

Actraiser Series

Half platformer, half city building strategy game, Actraiser 1 and 2 were loads of fun and innovative for it’s time. Both elements of the game are fantastically done. The score has legendary status in the gaming world, by Yuzo Koshiro it is pitch perfect for a 16-bit game. You pretty much play as God trying to take back a world you lost to Tanzra The Evil One. Despite warm critical reception, a cult following and numerous accolades Square Enix has never discussed a full blown remake.

Super Turrican 2

Super Turrican 2 is a high paced action shooter with great processing and Mode 7 graphics. The gameplay incorporates high frantic shooting with a Bionic Commando like grappling arm. After the 2 games developed for the SNES by Factor 5 the Turrican series never gained any traction.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Square went all out in creating the world of Mario in a fully realized environment in Mario’s first foray into the Role Playing genre. Although the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi series are considered spiritual successors they are not direct sequels or remakes. This game was a blast to play with very similar elements to earlier Square titles like Chrono Trigger. The visuals and sounds of this game are still absolutely astonishing to this day. Mixing the classic Mario tunes with Square’s unique sounds created an aural pleasure. Nintendo and Square need to hook up again and continue this story.

Sunset Riders

Remaking an old west game at this time may be pointless considering Rockstar’s incredible Red Dead Redemption, but Sunset Riders still needs to get some love. The arcade game was good, but the SNES port was even better. The side scrolling and directional shooting was extremely well done. The graphics and sound were solid as this was the first game I played where I actually got that Old West sense. The Contra-style power ups kept the gameplay fresh and the high difficulty ensured that players would come back again and again to try to complete this gem of a game. So hopefully Konami will get back on the saddle and reimagine Sunset Riders.
