
Artie Lange is making a comeback. The former Howard Stern sidekick announced on his friend Joe Matarese’s podcast Fixing Joe that he and comedian Nick DiPaolo have agreed to do a sports talk/comedy radio show for Fox Sports. Lange disappeared from show business after a violent suicide attempt on January 2nd, 2010. Check out WVG’s top 10 Artie Lange moments below.
10. Artie Blasts Baba Booey for Terrible First Pitch
On May 9, 2009 longtime Howard Stern Show producer Gary “Baba Booey” Dell’Abate threw out the first pitch at Shea Stadium. No words can explain how awful an attempt Gary put forth, so watch it here. What followed when the show returned to air is nothing short of an epic ball busting for the ages.
9. The Birth of the Baby Gorilla
Despite Artie Lange’s drug problems at the time that led to him not being resigned by Madtv he was able to land a role in a major motion picture. Dirty Work the brainchild of then SNL Weekend Update anchorman Norm MacDonald starred Lange and MacDonald in sort of a buddy comedy. The great Don Rickles made a cameo and Lange tells the story of how the nickname “Baby Gorilla” was born.
8. Artie vs. Andrew Dice Clay
Comedian Andrew Dice Clay was always a Stern Show favorite, the guy makes for great radio. Artie and Dice did a comedy gig together and Artie was promised $5000 for his appearance. Artie claims that comedy gigs almost always pay out that night, but he hasn’t received his share for months. So Dice calls in and a classic brawl ensues.
7. Artie Reveals Heroin Addiction
On September 21st, 2006 Artie revealed on air that he once was addicted to heroin. Howard brought up 3 homeless men for a contest and one of them was a heroin addict. Artie offered the man Subutex, a drug that helps with the withdrawals of heroin. What followed is one of the most honest and touching moments in the history of the Stern show.
6. Artie and Gilbert Gottfried Bring the Funny
Arguably the Stern Show’s best guest is comedian Gilbert Gottfried. The parrot from Aladdin actually thrives on racist and offensive jokes. When Artie and Gilbert get together it’s nothing short of gold and in this appearance they take on Bill Maher and Tom Cruise among others.
5. Artie vs. Sal Governale and Richard Christy
Stern Show phony phone call mainstays Sal and Richard are jealous of the treatment Artie receives. Howard and Artie retaliate which culminates in Artie throwing stuff a Sal.
4. Artie Roasts Baba Booey
The Baba Booey roast is one of the best pieces of radio from the Sirius era and of course Artie takes the stand and crushes. Artie really goes after the man he replaced, Jackie Martling, and of course destroys Sal as well.
3. Artie Gets Vicious with Lisa G
Lisa G of the Howard 100 news team called Dr. Drew to ask about Artie’s new detox program. Artie is annoyed and calls Lisa G all kinds of names, but oddly enough in the midst of insulting her he manages to be hilarious.
2. Artie’s Drunken Rampage on Vegas Trip
The Stern Show went to Vegas which produced a legendary drunken rampage from Artie Lange. Also included is the show’s reaction the next day on air with Jimmy Kimmel in studio.
1. Artie Shines on Joe Buck Live
Joe Buck Live was a short lived sports talk show on HBO with sports broadcaster Joe Buck. On the first episode Buck invited Artie Lange to join a panel discussion with Paul Rudd and SNL’s Jason Sudeikis. Buck wasn’t prepared for Artie’s comedic stylings.
